A Brief Overview of Investment Casting

Investment casting is an industrial procedure based on low cast waxing. It is one of the oldest techniques of forming metal. The term “lost-wax casting” refers to modern-day investment casting processes. In earlier times, beeswax aids in creating patterns required for casting. Today, more advanced forms of waxes, other materials and special alloys are mostly used by investment casting manufacturers for making patterns. It is used for its potential to make items with proficiency, repeatability, multifaceted and integrity in the diversity of metals along with high-performance alloys. Investment casting is a process used to manufacture disposable ceramic moulds shaped out of wax patterns.

The process involved in the wax casting

• A master pattern is created from clay, wax, or wood.

• Metal dies are used to produce an expendable universal way. It is moulded in the shape of the master pattern using rubber or metals with a low melting point.

• Wax patterns are produced by pouring the wax into the mould and swirling it around until the desired thickness is reached.

• The wax patterns are then assembled according to the requirements and are then attached as a cluster using a heating tool.

• After this the investment materials are coated onto the moulds by coating it repeatedly. Refined materials are used first to do a prime coating. These steps are repeated until the desired thickness is reached, and then they are left to dry.

• Once ceramic moulds have been completely cured and dried they are kept upside-down. They are then placed within a furnace or a steriliser machine to melt out or vaporise the wax. The mould is then subjected to a burnout.

• The mould is placed in the sand for it to cool completely before removing it from its castings.

• The casting is then cleaned up, and any alterations are made according to the customer requirements.
